In the beginning....

sign postThe Great Chart Society was inaugurated in 1989 by the formation of a management committee with an Annual General Meeting held in November. It was set up as a pressure group to ensure the route of the Eurostar high speed rail track did not pass through the village. The outcome was successful and the movement continued with interests in the preservation of our Anglo-Saxon village. The Society has also been involved in the protection of the village from the proposed enlargement of Ashford, happily sheltering the western side of the Great Chart by-pass from its onward march.

As continuing development to the eastern side of the by-pass is part of the same Parish Council area and residents in that area increasingly became members of the society, it was decided to amend the name to the Great Chart with Singleton Society. This will become ever more relevant as the development proposals for the Chilmington area proceed.

street cornerAs time has passed we have developed more and more into a social group thus fostering a community spirit and providing fellowship. Our membership list boasts about 80 from all walks of life and age groups, with a number from outside the parish. Regular events are held throughout the year and we invite you to come and join us. Our annual membership fees are quite modest.
